Oshawa Centre Dental Office
Occlusion is the dental term for how your teeth fit together (also called your bite).
The way your teeth fit together can affect your oral health.
The proper dental bite is one where the upper front teeth sit just in front of your lower teeth. and your back teeth fit Into the groves of the opposing teeth.
Malocclusion is a dental term for misaligned teeth. In other words the incorrect alignment of the upper and lower teeth. Malocclusion is also known as an over/underbite, crowded teeth or crossbite.
Malocclusion can cause many negative dental issues such as :
•broken teeth
•enamel wear
•teeth becoming mobile or loose
•pain in the jaw/jaw muscles
•clicking or popping
of the jaw joints
•headaches
•tooth sensitivity
•difficulty chewing
Malocclusion can be hereditary or can be the result of thumb sucking or prolonged use of pacifiers, baby bottles or cleft palate.
The treatment of malocclusion is orthodontics. Fixed or removable appliances to correct the alignment of the teeth and jaws.
Children’s teeth are easier to correct because the bones are still developing. However, adults can also benefit from orthodontics to correct malocclusions
