Paleo Diet & Oral Health

Many diets are trending right now however, one diet that seems to be gaining in popularity is the Paleo Diet.

What is Paleo?

Paleo is a return to foods that are unprocessed and free of starches and sugars. This diet is based on the ‘hunter-gathered ‘ philosophy.

Paleo consists of :

-lean meats

-nuts

-seafood

-fruits

-seeds

-eggs

-vegetables

Benefits on Oral Health:

-No sugar

-No starch

Both of these contain acids that can erode tooth enamel leading to cavities and poor oral health.

-No processed food

Negative Impacts on Oral Health:

-Vitamin deficiency. Calcium, Vitamin D and Magnesium are important for good oral health

-No dairy. Dairy helps teeth in the natural re-mineralization process. Lack of dairy products in your diet inhibits your teeth' ability to repair themselves.

-High protein diets can also lead to bad breath. When you consume a large amount of protein, your body can create an increased amount of ammonia leading to bad breath.

To gain any benefits from a particular diet. Consideration must also be given to the benefits and risks to your oral health. The benefits to your overall wellbeing greatly depend on your oral health being at its best!

Regular dental examinations and cleanings will help you achieve your goal!
