Take Care of Your Gums
We know that we need to take care of our teeth by brushing and flossing etc. However, there is another important part of our oral health we also need to take care of, our gums. Healthy gums should look firm and pink.
There are 2 types of gum disease. Gingivitis and Periodontitis.
Gingivitis (early stage of gum disease)
Signs of Gingivitis
•bleeding gums
•redness
•swelling
•soreness/sensitivity
•bad breath
Gingivitis can be treated by proper oral hygiene and most importantly dental cleaning. Your hygienist can get into areas of your mouth that brushing alone cannot reach.
Periodontitis (advanced stage of gum disease) A more advanced stage of gum disease. It can have the same symptoms as gingivitis, however, you can now have loose teeth. The bacteria that causes gum disease has now progressed into not only the gums but the bone that surrounds the teeth. This weakens the bones and makes it harder for the teeth to stay in place. Unlike, gingivitis, periodontitis requires a ‘deep cleaning’.
Bacteria will need to be removed from the roots of the teeth and also the surrounding bone tissue.
Tips for healthy gums:
•When you brush your teeth, brush your gums very gently •angle your brush to make sure to reach the gum line (this is where bacteria accumulates.
•floss daily (pay attention to the gum line) •schedule regular dental exams and cleanings
Important Note: You may not see or notice the signs of early gum disease. This is why it's so important that you have regular visits with your dentist and hygienist. If your dentist diagnoses Periodontitis you will be referred to the Periodontist for treatment. A Periodontist is a dental specialist that treats the gums and the bones that support teeth.
We have a Periodontist on our team. Therefore; you can be treated at our office in familiar surroundings.
